Description
Accelerate the innovation of engineering
This was the central theme of the ESI Symposium 2025, an event that brought together more than 500 professionals from across the high‑tech ecosystem. Attendees responded exceptionally positively to both the programme and the structure of the event, highlighting the strong connection between research, industrial practice and forward‑looking engineering insights.

The theme was inspired by the recent report by Mario Draghi, former President of the European Central Bank and Special Adviser to the European Commission on EU competitiveness. His message is clear: Europe faces an existential challenge. Productivity is stagnating, R&D investment lags behind global competitors, and we can no longer rely on workforce expansion. Innovation is essential to close the widening gap.

In the Netherlands, this challenge is particularly visible. Our future progress depends on engineering smarter, strengthening the strategic capabilities needed to maintain technological leadership.

At TNO‑ESI, we believe the answer lies a.o. in Systems Engineering: disciplined methodologies, advanced tooling and close collaboration between industry and education. With the high‑tech sector as a leading example, these approaches have already proven their ability to boost productivity and accelerate innovation across complex engineering environments.

This year’s symposium also highlighted the strength of our ecosystem. Our speakers - respected representatives from our partner organisations - brought inspiring expertise and real‑world insights that showcased what is possible when science and industry innovate together. Their contributions underline a clear message: by engineering smarter, we can turn Europe’s challenge into tomorrow’s opportunity.
